About Paul …

With over 30 years of experience advising owner-managed businesses on a wide range of topics, Paul has earned a strong reputation for honesty, integrity, commitment and hard work not only with his client’s, but with the professionals he works with.  While continuing to provide a broad range of services to his clientele, he has developed an expertise in succession planning to assist owner-managed businesses in preparing their business for sale.

Paul’s career has been marked by his enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment to his firm’s clients.  He focuses his time on relationship building, business advisory services, as well as professional services, including: tax and succession planning, corporate reorganizations, purchase and sale of businesses and bank financing. He provides leadership to the business and spends much of his time directly with clients, often functioning as a “sounding board” to the owners of the companies his firm services. 

In 2019, Paul was one of 55 members selected by CPA Ontario to become an FCPA.  An FCPA is more than an extra letter in the designation, it is the highest honour bestowed by CPA Ontario - it is recognition from peers and a reflection of an outstanding career, as a leader both in business and in the community.

Knowledge …

Paul graduated from the University of Waterloo, Ontario in 1979 with a Bachelor of Mathematics degree (BMath), and received his designation as a Chartered Accountant (CA) in 1980, and his designation as a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) in 2012. 

Paul has also completed extensive continuing professional development, including:

  • CICA In-Depth Tax Course,
  • Various advanced tax courses with a focus on the owner-managed business,
  • Management.

Experience …

After service in the tax and compliance units at BDO, Chartered Accountants, he left public accounting to spend two years with an international company in the mass transit industry, first as a controller then as a Vice President.  Paul was also a part-time instructor of accounting and finance at Sheridan College, and has taught tax for the federal government’s EI program. 

In 1985 Paul re-entered public accounting to open his own firm in North Mississauga, building a practice focused on servicing owner-managed businesses across the GTA.

From 1990 - 1994, Paul served on the Board of Directors at the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), was a member of the Executive Committee, and chaired six committees during his tenure, including the Finance Committee.

In 2005, he was invited to serve on the Peer Review Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) where he served until 2009.  As part of maintaining professional standards in the profession, all public accounting practices are subject to a mandatory review of their standards as they relate to financial statement preparation.  The work of the members of the Peer Review Committee involves the assessment of these findings. 

In 2009, Paul was invited to serve on the Discipline Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO), and later the Chartered Professional Accountants Ontario (CPA).  On this Committee, Paul serves on four-person tribunals that hear evidence in discipline hearings of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario.  Paul continues to serve on this Committee.

In 2007, he co-authored and presented the course “Small Practitioners – How to Survive and Thrive?” for the ICAO, and he continues to present the course to CPA’s in Ontario and other provinces.  He has written articles related to this course that have been published in national professional periodicals.  

From 2014 - 2016, Paul served as Financial Officer with the Halton Standard Condominium Corporation # 552.  During his tenure, he assisted the Board of Directors with budgeting and liaison with the condo auditors.

In 2018 he served on an Appeals Committee Tribunal at CPA Ontario

From 2018-2019 Paul was a member of the Board of the Burlington Symphony Orchestra serving first as their Treasurer, then in a strategic leadership role.
